WHAT WILL BE COVERED

A compelling structure

Does your story have a satisfying narrative arc? Will readers be propelled through each page towards a powerful ending? Will they want to read it all over again? Discover how to structure your storytelling to create maximum impact.

Harness your hook

Find out about the elusive ‘hook’. Editors need a strong hook in order to sell ideas to the sales force. No hook, no book! But what exactly does that mean? What makes a good hook and how does it shape your narrative? Learn about this vital component of your storytelling.

Hone your tone

Picture books are a unique format, with multiple ways to be enjoyed and myriad ways to tell the same story. Learn how to resonate with your audience and hone your style to suit your subject matter and the needs of the market.

Stand out submissions

How do you capture the attention of an agent or editor in the unflatteringly designated ‘slush pile’?! Drawing on the earlier sessions, learn how to condense your story into a compelling pitch and avoid common submission pitfalls.

Tour of Tiger Towers

Meet the creative team on a tour of the Little Tiger publishing house. And enjoy a hands-on display of every stage in the life of a book. Plus there will be a sneak peak of Little Tiger’s current, top-secret picture book list!

One-To-One

Receive face-to-face feedback and guidance from an experienced editor on two of your picture book texts to encourage you to improve your work in a friendly, positive environment.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Preparation for your One-To-One

Once you have purchased your ticket, please prepare to submit two picture book texts without illustrations of no more than 600 words each – prose or verse – perfect for sharing with children aged 3–6. (Please do not include illustration notes unless essential to the storytelling). You will sit down with a Little Tiger editor and have a ten minute one-to-one about both texts on the day.

You will need to email them both to us at iamwriting@iaminprint.co.uk in one Word or PDF document by Sunday 9 November at 7pm UK GMT, with your name as the document heading. A covering letter is not required. Your texts will be sent to Little Tiger in advance of your one-to-one so they can prepare feedback. On the day you will need to bring a copy of these stories with you and choose one to work on during the classroom sessions.

Refreshments and lunch are included

When you book your place, you will be sent a form to complete for any special dietary requirements and a pre-order for your favourite style of coffee! A buffet lunch, tea, coffee and water will provided during the day.

Additional needs

We want to look after you as best we can; if you are comfortable, your learning will be maximised! If you have any additional needs, such as needing wheelchair access or a hearing loop, or cognitive needs like needing a quiet breakout space, please let us know when you book. We're here to help and make your day the best it can be.

Will you be coming with a friend?

If you are planning to attend with a writing friend, please let us know when you book as attendees will be split into two groups and we will do our best to put you together.

Arrival time

Please arrive at 9:30am to relax, have a drink, meet everyone else, and breathe.

Finish time

Everything should be wrapped up by 5:00pm, but when booking your transport home perhaps allow some extra time, just in case.

Ticket Price

The price of each ticket is £129. This includes your workshops, all materials issued on the day, a tour of Tiger Towers, the one-to-one, the buffet lunch and all refreshments.

There is one Golden Ticket available allowing one writer to attend free of charge. Please see below to find out if you are eligible to apply for this opportunity.
