PICTURE BOOK WORKSHOP WITH TOM MCLAUGHLIN

WHAT WILL BE COVERED IN THIS PICTURE BOOK WORKSHOP

Do you find making-up stories easy? Does imaginative text flow through you? Perhaps your illustrations would perfectly support an author’s ideas? Do you already have an agent or publishing deal and want to improve your craft? Then book yourself onto THIS INCREDIBLE PICTURE BOOK WORKSHOP and, who knows, what fabulous ideas and connections you’ll come away with!

Led by super funny, totally brilliant author and illustrator Tom McLaughlin, with Literary Agent Christabel McKinley and Commissioning Editor Katy Flint, learn the basis for creating a picture book with characters children and parents will love. You will learn the process of how to develop a picture book, structure story, embellish characters, apply different artwork techniques, and gain an insight into today’s picture book market. Moreover, you will learn how to pitch your idea to an agent.

Literary Agent Christabel McKinley from David Higham Associates will present a Q & A session regarding today’s picture book market and how an agent works with an author / illustrator to secure the best deal.

Commissioning Editor Katy Flint from Wide Eyed Editions and Frances Lincoln Children’s Books (imprints of the Quarto Group) will demystify the stages of bookmaking and explain how to balance being a creative in a business environment. From harnessing an idea and pitching it, to editing, contracts, finance, production, and publication, Katy will help you understand the commercial angle of what publishers look for.

As an added feature to this already amazing day, Christabel and Katy are each offering eight 15 minute one-to-one sessions, which can be booked in addition to your workshop place (1 booking with either Christabel or Katy per attendee).

TOM MCLAUGHLIN

There’s not much funny guy Tom McLaughlin hasn’t tried in the world of writing and illustrating. Having worked as a political cartoonist for The Western Morning News and an animation designer for various TV shows he tried his hand at publishing – with great success. Illustrating books and covers for other authors as well as his own solo projects, Tom has been published by top publishing houses. Bloomsbury, Puffin, Scholastic, OUP and Walker have all signed his delightful stories so far. Nominated for countless awards his books have been translated into over ten different languages.

His sense of humour has helped him navigate life, including being diagnosed with dyslexia as a child. But while he describes feeling “different” from other children, this never held him back. His journey to becoming a published author is inspiring. Eager to help any child who identifies as different, he has written and illustrated books such as Along Came A Different and The Story Machine.

Allow him to motivate you into getting published by attending this picture book workshop.

BONUS

As a bonus for booking a place on this course we will send you a code before you attend to watch for free our live, interactive interview with Tom, which took place in April 2019. We left the room completely inspired that day, and know you will too.

CHRISTABEL MCKINLEY

Christabel works at David Higham Associates literary agency, where she works closely with Caroline Walsh on her list of children’s authors. Ranging from picture book authors and illustrators to young adult writers, the list includes Tom McLaughlin, Anna Kemp, Cressida Cowell and Liz Pichon. Previously, Christabel worked in International Rights at Macmillan Children’s Books and, as a result, has well-rounded experience of different corners of the industry and stages of a book’s life. Prior to her publishing career, she taught English in South Korea (quite literally Gangnam style), which is where she initially discovered a passion for bringing exciting and inspiring books to young people.

KATY FLINT

Katy has been working in children’s publishing for five years. She works on a mix of narrative non-fiction and picture books and handles about 40 titles a year. She loves opening up the conversation between publishers and creatives, and reducing the mystery about the industry. She has been running an editorial Q&A every Sunday on her Instagram, which allows illustrators and authors to ask questions about the process. Follow her here to join the conversation: @katy_flint

Having been asked to write about any number of subjects as an in-house editor, from human bodies to dinosaurs, Katy has authored the best-selling Story Orchestra series.

SUBMISSIONS FOR KATY’S ONE-TO-ONE SESSIONS

ABOUT YOU
Tell Katy about yourself, your work, your clients (if any), your goals, and link to your website or social accounts. She looks for a concept she hasn’t seen before, a twist on a classic, or anything where the child can get lost in their imagination. She is drawn to texts with warmth and stylish execution. Narrative non-fiction is her specialty and she has experience with novelty books, if that is your bag.

AUTHORS
She likes to read a word doc of the full text, even if it’s early draft stages. A blurb summary should be at the top, persuasively told. If the editorial concept is unique, a book plan with some draft text is enough to excite her.

ILLUSTRATORS
A storyboard (or sketches) and some pieces of colour art. Ideally showing off your talent, whether that’s the natural world, people, magical realism, or animals. If you don’t have a specific idea she would be happy to review your portfolio on the day and talk through its strengths.

Your submissions for Christabel McKinley or Katy Flint should be sent to hello@iaminprint.co.uk by Saturday 16 May 2020, 12 noon.
(Please note: AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATORS send illustrations with text)
