PANEL: THE CHAIN - AUTHOR, AGENT, PUBLISHER

What’s it like to have a publishing deal? How does your agent support you? How does the agent and publisher work together? And what are everyone’s obligations in The Chain of getting your book written, edited and on that shelf? Join author Kate Poels who attended last year’s I Am Writing Festival as a delegate, and is now joined by her agent Amanda Preston and publisher Nia Beynon from Boldwood Books to let you in on what happens behind the scenes, why publication takes so long and how a 5-book deal like Kate’s can be achieved! WRITING FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH JENNY MOORE

More and more writers are branching out into writing multiple genres to supplement their income and keep their own interest levels up. But how easy is it to switch from one writing style to another without causing confusion to yourself and your readers? Jenny Moore and Kate Poels not only write adult thriller / cosy crime but are also both successful children’s authors under the Maverick publishing label. Is it necessary to change your name? How do you promote yourself to two very different readerships, and what key differences and similarities are there in writing for very different markets?

Kate writes books for children with Maverick Books and as an indie writer under the name Kate Poels, and has her first cosy crime due for publication with Boldwood Books in August under the name Kate Wells. She reviews books on Instagram and BBC Radio Berkshire, delivers creative writing workshops, and for three years she co-coordinated the FCBG Children’s Book Award. She now finds herself living in Reading with her husband, teenaged daughters and wonderfully bonkers collie-cross.
