IAIP: Was the book that secured you an agent the first novel you attempted to write?
NS: No, I wrote one before this, but ultimately I didn’t feel the style was quite right. I hadn’t found the voice I was looking for.
IAIP: How long did it take you to write the book that secured you your agent?
NS: Only 5 months of actual writing time. And a few months waiting for feedback; so about 9 months in total.
IAIP: After you sent your submission to your current agent, how long did it take until you signed on the dotted line?
NS: Only a week or so. She was very keen on the novel!
IAIP: You took part in a few #Agent121 sessions to help strengthen your pitch whilst querying. Do you believe that these helped you secure your agent deal? If so, in what ways did they help?
NS: Yes, definitely. Each agent is looking for something different, and these sessions emphasised the importance of targeting each agent’s particular preferences.
IAIP: What have you learned about the publishing industry since you started querying?
NS: It’s incredibly tough! And, therefore, if you try to rush, and you don’t ensure that your submission is absolutely perfect, you’re unlikely to succeed.
IAIP: Do you have any tips on making the most of an #Agent121?
NS: Ask questions. Lots of questions.
